When Is The Right Time To Have “The Talk”

We don’t really want our kids to grow up. At least not yet! Still, it is important for you to explain major concepts to them (like death, or sex, or race discrimination) as oon as they are mature enough to handle it.

Generally, speaking the first conversation will be basic. Just touch on the main ideas. Leave the topic open for questions. Details can come later as needed. Besides, with the access to information that children have these days, they may already be forming opinions and you will want to share your views with them.

When I taught my own children about sex, it was around the beginning of
puberty. As it happened, I was homeschooling at the time and started with plants and animal reproduction. This way the facts could be presented in a more clinical way.

However, I would have discussed this with my children between the ages of eight and 10 either way. Whichever topic you are introducing, you have to consider what kids their age are talking about and decide if you want your children to get their information from you or them.

Have you had “the talk” with your children? When do you plan on doing so?
