Families, Parenting, And Watching TV With Your Kids

There are all types of families. The ones you’re born into and the ones you
choose.

So many children have experienced divorce these days that this is not as hard
for them to accept as you might think. Still, it is important to talk to your children about what it means to be in a family and what it means to be in a relationship.

This can be as simple as watching a TV show or movie with your child, since
often children’s shows these days deal with these topics. After all, the plot of most child adventure stories starts out with getting rid of the parents in one way or another.

When I watch a movie with the kids in my program, I interject anytime I notice a topic I feel might confuse them. For instance, when one character says something mean, instead of going with the laugh that often follows, I might say aloud, “That wasn’t nice, was it?” Just to get them thinking about it.

Do you use your TV as a babysitter or do you watch with them? If you don’t, you are definitely missing an opportunity!
